remember when I was redesigning the Olympians because yeah that was a thing I was doing
Drew this forever ago but I just now finally got around to coloring it, oops. Ares definitely needed to be redesigned (in Hercules/the series he was a short fat balding man played for comedic effects). Athena could have stayed the same, since I really liked her design, but ehhhh I was already redesigning Ares so whatever why not. (Her voice from the series can stay the same though, that was SPOT ON)
So yes, Ares is in red, and that's Athena there in blues. For anyone that doesn't know: Ares was the Greek god of war and crazy things like masculinity and bloodlust. Athena was his direct counterpart, his half-sister and godDESS of war, as well as wisdom, arts and crafts, and a few other things. Though generally represented as the calmer rational side to Ares' violence, Athena had a nasty temper and is responsible for turning Medusa into the monster everyone knows her for.
Fun fact about Ares-- canonically and mythologically, all the other gods were afraid of him/disliked him because of his violent tendencies and nasty attitude. BUT believe it or not as far as I've found Ares is one of the only main gods who has never raped anyone, which is a gigantic deal because EVERYONE did it, even fan favorite Hermes. In fact, one of Ares' more popular myths involves one of his mortal daughter's being raped by Poseidon's mortal sons. When he found out about it, he abruptly went and murdered the guy.
Way to go, Ares. You might be horrifyingly violent and terrifying, but you're not as terrible as you could be--
